In this New York Times guest op-ed, Fergus M. Bordewich argues that the notion of a "freedom quilt" containing a hidden map of the Underground Railroad is a myth. However, he doesn't present much evidence of that. Unfortunately, such a notion would be difficult to entirely disprove ... lack of evidence not really being the same as evidence to the contrary. Is there not even one quilt that can be shown to contain a coded map? How sad.
